Four Ways to Style One Trend: Dark Romance
Posted by Chelsea Lankford on Aug 23rd 2023
Fall style is all about a cool mood when it comes to getting dressed: deep jewel tones and rich textures are the standard. This season, the focus is on dark romance – a gothic-inspired vibe (that you don’t have to take too literally) – which was popularized over the summer by Netflix’s Wednesday. While the Addams Family might be all black all the time, just a few well-placed pieces inspired by the dark romance trend can spice up your wardrobe effortlessly in understated—or obvious—ways, depending on what you like to wear. That’s the best part about trending styles – you don’t have to abandon what works for you to try them out! You just need a little creativity.
Let’s start small with this one because there are plenty of people out there who might hear “Wednesday Addams” and “goth” and run for the hills. For the more timid among us, adding in some dark and mysterious jewelry might be the route to follow. Style Encore is the perfect place to browse for fashion-forward jewelry: look for delicate chain earrings in dark or black metal or statement black gemstones to set off your jewel-tone fall looks.
For shoes, send out a search for chunky black loafers if you aren’t the type to go for a classic creeper style. A thick lug sole will capture the essence of the look, and don’t shy away from hardware. Silver buckles add a finishing touch and a little extra sparkle to your step. If you’re wearing a loafer-style shoe, contrast the look with a more delicate dress that features a drop ruffle hem or lace pattern. Here, feel free to add some color so the outfit doesn't go monochrome: mix in a deep maroon or vibrant navy in dress or blouse form.
Last but not least, don’t forget the outerwear! Black coats and jackets are pretty common for fall and winter in the Midwest and across the country, but the silhouette is what you’ll want to focus on to update your wardrobe to fit this trend. Longline coats in a wool blend with leather accents or metal buckles will serve your wardrobe for years beyond the lifespan of any trend! This year is also the perfect time to pull out a cape-style jacket, as the unique, mysterious fit will stand out from the crowd all fall and winter long. Let yourself be drawn to the dark side of the racks at your local Style Encore as you plan your fall wardrobe. As Wednesday would say, “I'll stop wearing black when they make a darker color"!
