Your Carry-On Capsule: Stylish Travel Essentials You’ll Actually Wear

I used to overpack like I was fleeing the country for an indefinite amount of time—when really, I was just heading out for a quick weekend at the cabin with family or a city excursion with my girlfriends. But after leaving too many hotel floors cluttered with mismatched shoes and “just in case” outfits, I’ve realized that treating my suitcase like a miniature capsule wardrobe is my recipe for travel success.

Over the years, my travel essentials have made themselves pretty clear: a white T-shirt, a sweater or airy puffer that doubles as a plane blanket, my favorite jeans, and linen or wool pants that feel like pajamas but look polished. I also pack dresses I can wear with sneakers during the day or heels for dinner. I aim for two or three mix-and-match outfits and let layers do the heavy lifting for longer trips. A cropped jacket, a knit tank, and a button-up go a long way—especially when they all work together. The color palette is essential, but I like to let myself play with inspiration depending on the destination.

I always bring a structured tote for the plane and tuck a small crossbody inside, giving me two handbag options in the form of “one personal item.” I like my crossbody to have a bold color or texture. And I never go anywhere without a hat—either a ball cap or a beanie—one of those “you never know” things. Accessories can sometimes feel awkward to pack, but they generally take up much less room than clothing and can make a substantial impact when it comes to variety.

I used to think comfort and style could only live in competition with each other, but that’s one belief shopping secondhand has helped me break down. Style Encore carries all of your travel-friendly needs: comfortable denim, cozy sweaters, lightweight knits, and gently-used footwear that has already been on a test drive. Now, I’m finally at a place where I don’t need fresh outfits for every day of vacation—just the right pieces to make every day feel fresh.
