Making the Most of Minimalist Outfits

Minimalism isn’t just a chic way to dress. It’s a style that’s rooted in sustainability because it inherently subscribes to the idea that less is more. Crafting a wardrobe from a minimalist perspective is an eco-conscious way to approach personal style that can make getting dressed each day much simpler. However, the simplicity of it can seem overwhelming. Exploring how you feel best in an under-trimmed, low-key ensemble will get you set up for the next time you want to use less to achieve your look.

Minimalism is characterized by essentials, but that never has to mean boring. Although the tendency is often to lean neutral, a well-crafted pop of color won’t feel out of place. A go-to outfit for my every day is a white t-shirt and denim jeans, which I like to accessorize with a sleek crossbody bag in a soft pink or bright red. When it comes to jewelry, there’s room to play between dainty and statement pieces, but nothing about the look is overdone. You could accessorize with one bold jewelry piece, like a beaded necklace, or stay subtle with your favorite gold hoop earrings–just keep close to a formula of “one over the other” rather than both. Remember, less is more!

At first, minimalism may be generalized as cold and sleek due to its clean lines and solid colors. While you want to consider a look using items that won’t distract from one another, that doesn’t mean your outfit can’t demand attention. While a simple striped top can mix in well with a minimalist wardrobe, prioritizing texture over patterns will make it even easier for your wardrobe items to mix and match among themselves

Using a thoughtful combination of textures can make a minimalist outfit stand out. Pay attention to how a garment feels in your hand when combing the racks at your local Style Encore. A chiffon-sleeved top over a silk skirt or a ribbed sweater with a wool trouser combines textures enough without introducing pattern or print.

When in doubt, take Coco Chanel’s classic advice to heart: “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” Embracing a minimalist lifestyle for your closet will curate a timeless aesthetic while contributing to a more sustainable fashion future.
