Smart and Stylish Shopping

Have you ever noticed how style-conscious shoppers tend to seek out the same items at secondhand stores compared to regular clothing retailers? It's always like, "My jeans? Found them at Style Encore!" or "This blazer? Vintage!" While you can't tell by appearance whether something was purchased secondhand or not, there are a few clothing categories that are generally foolproof to include on your shopping list when you want to add a little something extra to your seasonal wardrobe.

Outerwear is one of the most common items to look for at gently-used clothing stores like your local Style Encore. When you don't wear these items directly against your skin, you have more flexibility in terms of fabric choice and fit. Outerwear pieces such as blazers, trench coats, or lightweight chambray jackets can create a chic and casual look when worn with an oversized fit. Some cozy rustic wool fibers may feel slightly prickly against the skin, but when used in a cardigan or loose-fitting blazer that you'll wear over a long-sleeve layer, you have more options to explore.

Denim is one of the top go-to closet staples to consider buying secondhand. There's nothing quite like a pair of perfectly worn-in jeans that are almost more comfortable than your favorite sweatpants, and when you find them on the gently-used racks, the hard work has already been done for you. While blue jean trends come and go, it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for a pair of mid-rise, mid-wash, straight or slim-leg jeans that will stand the test of time and remain stylish.

Of course, one of my favorite things to shop for at Style Encore is special occasion wear. Gently-used eveningwear is perfect for those one-night-only dresses because you'll spend significantly less than you would at a regular clothing retailer, but that's not even the best part. The chances of someone else wearing the same outfit are almost non-existent, and being able to stand out in a one-of-a-kind find can add that extra special touch to an already exceptional event. And here's a pro tip: consider browsing through sizes that surround your standard sizeā€”if you typically wear a medium, there might be a few treasures tucked away in the designated small or large sections that could be an even better fit.
