Timeless Fashion Trends
Posted by Chelsea Lankford on Jul 25th 2023
What's the biggest fashion cliché I could start this article with? "Everything old becomes new again." However, it happens to hold the biggest truth! Fashion trends get recycled decade after decade, interpreted by new generations in new ways, and it's always exciting to see what resurfaces and stays, as opposed to what fades into the fashion background of years past.
The 1940s were characterized by exquisite tailoring, a trademark of that fashion era. Tailoring in the 1940s was styled in a way that was more close-fitting to the actual body measurements of the wearer, which is the technical and authentic definition of a tailored fit - custom edits made for your body. A 2023 update will take your tailored pieces farther away from the body for a boxy fit while keeping those sharp details in focus: shoulder seams sitting squarely at the top of your arm, and trousers breaking with a full length in 2023. Seek out these details in prints like plaid or houndstooth to infuse your wardrobe with timeless inspiration.
Puffed sleeves and polka dots were all over the 1960s, and they continue to be two elements that modern fashion shares with that era of peace and love. Sleeve details like ruching or extra fabric can often be found in silky rayon blouses or lightweight sweaters at your local Style Encore - even better if you come across one in a polka-dot print, allowing you to combine both trends! Mixing a puff-sleeve sweater with a pair of tailored pants or pairing a polka-dot blouse with a floaty skirt are fun ways to incorporate sixties trends into your contemporary wardrobe.
Throughout this summer season, leather (or faux!) fisherman sandals have been gracing the streets and runways. While I no longer fit into my own fisherman-style sandals from the 90s, I certainly wish my mother had kept hers for my sake! Closed-toe sandals are also appreciated in business-casual workplaces as they offer a pretty, professional, and breathable option. The basketweave leather straps across the top add a timeless finishing touch to a summer skirt and blouse.
Take a stroll through your local Style Encore store and observe trends that brands have carried across the decades. It just goes to show that the saying is true - anything old can become new again!
